As I mentioned before, Sarajoy LOVED the bag of baby boy clothes that I brought home. She buried herself in them. As soon as Dallin got home, she shouted, "Mommy BOY" and ran upstairs to show him the loot. I bagged it all up and told her we got too much, and we would be taking it back to the store. I said maybe we'd get ONE thing for the baby boy.
She happened to be with me when I arrived at customer service. As we pulled away from the desk (she was in the cart) without the baby boy clothes, she burst into tears. "BABY BOY!" She cried for about 10 minutes while I browsed around the store. She settled down a little when I gave her her pacifier, but was sad again when we left the store with nothing.
Later that day, I offered to take Daisy to the store to spend some of her birthday money. She wanted to buy some nail polish. I invited Ruby and thought we might find something cute and simple and cheaper for our baby boy. We did. Ruby got nervous when I put several outfits in the cart to compare. She was not about to let me make that mistake again! We came home with a cute little layette set that we all felt great about.
As soon as I pulled in the driveway, the garage door opened and Sarajoy ran out with her little finger in the air. "One? Baby Boy?...One? Baby Boy?"
"Yes, we got one outfit for our baby boy."
She got to carry the bag in.
Ruby dressed her life-sized baby doll in the outfit. We wrapped it up and put it in the crib. I changed the bedding from Sarajoy's pink leftovers to a blanket Nathan had when he was a baby.
I have to admit the effect was very nice!
Sarajoy thought so, too. I have long known that she had my same passion for babies. Apparently she has the same love for baby clothes that I have, too!
She stayed in the crib loving that baby boy for quite some time. And, of course, she jumped up from the table when Dallin walked in so she could show him.
After dinner, I went up to my room to lie down for awhile.
"Hi, mama. Baby Boy."
There she was in the crib again.
Today I changed the Baby Boy into another boyish doll outfit to spare the brand-new one. She just couldn't resist taking care of that baby all day long. She didn't mind the change, and was glad I was letting her drag the thing around the house instead of keeping it in the crib.
I think it was about 9:45 when I noticed an unusual calm. I could hear the kids playing, but it didn't seem like she was involved. I asked if they knew where she was, and they said no.
I walked into our little nursery, and there she was, asleep in the crib with her arm around her baby boy.
I spent a few hours reading to the kids and going over our timeline. When it was time for a break, the same odd realization that she was not around struck me.
There she was again! Asleep again! How long has it been since this girl took 2 naps in one day? I can't remember, but it was the sweetest thing.
I'm glad I have a baby-lovin' buddy.
She's got the right name.
What a precious story!
ReplyDeleteHeidi calls our baby "Baby Boy" too. She checks my belly every once in a while and then checks her own and pats herself while muttering, "Baby Boy, Baby Boy," under her breath.
(I think it's these cute toddlers who are the ones who keep getting us to have more babies!!!)
What a sweet little mama! How exciting for you and for her!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your baby boy! I'm so excited for you, Sarah!
ReplyDeleteThat is too cute!
ReplyDeleteThat is probably THE cutest big sibling story I've ever heard.
